The project
A ranch house, brought into the light.
The house had good bones, low ceilings, and a dark south wall. The family wanted a kitchen that opened to the garden, a brighter entry, and a utility bill that stopped climbing. They stayed in the house through construction.
We added a 620 sq ft glazed kitchen and entry, replaced eight failing windows, and installed an 18 kW solar roof with a 26 kWh battery. The project was sequenced around the family’s routine and finished in nine weeks.
“The kitchen is the room we live in now. The solar bill in August was $11. We should have done this years ago.”
01 / The brief
What the building needed.
The original ranch had a low, closed south wall and a roof structure that could not carry a conventional solar array without reinforcement. The family wanted more daylight and a direct connection to the garden, but did not want to move out.
The budget was fixed. The scope had to be prioritized: glazing and solar first, cosmetic work second. We phased the work so the kitchen stayed usable except for four days.

02 / The approach
How we detailed it.
A glazed addition with a real roof
The new kitchen sits under a shallow-pitch roof that matches the existing house. Structural glass corners open the view without a visible frame.
Windows that pay for themselves
Eight original windows were replaced with triple-glazed units. The heating load dropped 42%, and the rooms hold their temperature through the evening.
Solar sized to the roof, not the showroom
An 18 kW array covers the new roof plane and the garage. A 26 kWh battery keeps the house running through the evening peak and short outages.
Nine weeks, one family
A temporary kitchen, dust walls, and a weekly schedule kept the family at home. The final inspection passed on the first walk-through.
